COLUMBUS, Ohio - Police said that they are uncovering the shady past of a nursing home worker accused of stealing money from patients.

Karen Carter (pictured, right) has a history of financial crimes and is currently on probation, 10TV's Maureen Kocot reported.

Carter is accused of stealing from patients at the Sanctuary at Tuttle Crossing Nursing Home where she worked as the business office manager.

Nursing home administrators said that it ran a criminal background check on Carter which should have revealed she was serving five years probation for theft.

Court records reveal that Carter is about to go on trial for felony charges that include stealing from patients at an east side nursing home.  The state posted her on its abuse registry on Oct. 16 but that was after Sanctuary hired her, Kocot reported.

In November, the state mandated background checks for nursing home employees who routinely have access to older adults' financial records.

10TV took the case to Ohio State Rep. Matt Huffman who said that it's proof that there is more work ahead.

"If someone is going to have access to sensitive financial information, they ought to be monitored and there should be a background check," Huffman said.

10TV uncovered a loophole in background checks.  Under Ohio law, perspective employees can provide their own background checks, opening up the possibility for forgeries.

Prosecutors said that Carter's own criminal background check was forged back in 2006 when she worked for another nursing home
