And that’s what the creators of Safer Dates are banking on. Company head Matthew Blackburn says Safer Dates offers better background screening than other online dating services. “We do all that we can. Safety is definitely a priority with us and we take it very seriously,” says Blackburn. You can become of member of Safer Dates without any screenings, but the site encourages members to undergo a background check for misdemeanors, felonies and marriage status. For an additional fee, the site will also facilitate sending fingerprints to the F.B.I. and obtaining a member’s complete criminal history. Icons on a member’s profile show what level of screening has been completed. Tiffany Riley is using Safer Dates. The 20-year-old is studying to become a police officer and says safety concerns led her to choose this particular service. “Especially in this day of age you can’t be too safe. With the Internet, people feel they can say anything and make up a complete different person and I don’t want to get into those situations,” says Riley. Safer Dates may tell you if your date has ever been busted, but there’s still no guarantee that your date won’t be a bust.
