Why Criminal Background Checks Are So Important

|

According to a recent statement on CNN, at least one in thirty-seven people in the United States have served time in prison. Chances are, you may run into at least one person who has served time. If you an employer, if you are curious about someone you are in a relationship with, or if you just need more information about someone, a criminal background check can put your mind at ease.

Simply relying on a person’s word is sadly not enough in today’s society. If you feel that someone is hiding something from you, this feeling can begin to eat at your confidence in this person, even if they are completely innocent. Instead of letting your thoughts run wild, or worse, falling prey to a dangerous individual, a criminal background check can be very beneficial.

Here are some warning signs that you may need to run a criminal background check on someone:

1. Refuses to reveal personal information, even after you have known them for a long time. While some people are just naturally private, if someone flatly refuses to tell you about their past, there may be some reason for concern. If this person is someone that you are dating, thinking about marrying, or hiring, this past information may be pivotal to your personal safety.

2. Uses several different names or aliases. Changing your name isn’t necessarily grounds to believe that criminal behavior is lurking, but someone who frequently uses more than one name, or has not changed their name legally may be someone with a past they are trying to hide. Aliases are commonly used by criminals to enable them to continue their scams, or to hide information about themselves.

3. Someone asks you to give them large sums of money, but you know nothing about them. There are possibly hundreds of thousands of cases where people were taken in by a sad story and ended up losing everything they owned to a con-man. If you know someone that has not provided you with background information on their own, and they are asking you for a large sum of money, it would be very beneficial to run a criminal background check on them.

4. Reference checks and a credit check come back with little or no information. When a criminal constantly changes their name, it may be difficult to get a credit report or even follow-up on provided references. In the case of an employer or landlord, this situation definitely calls for a criminal background check. Landlords in particular can benefit from this service to avoid ending up with tenants who refuse to pay rent or trash a dwelling.

The small price that you pay for running a criminal background check on someone can more than return your investment if you avoid losing money, your heart, or in the worst-case scenario, even your life. It is just not smart to trust someone implicitly, even if they provide you with a good front, or make you feel sorry for them. Listen to your own alarm bells and follow up on your intuition.
